Dee-Anna Staylor and Tom Byrnes

Two PPS employees were recently honored at the 2026 Virginia Academy of School Psychologists (VASP) conference.

PPS School Psychologist Dee-Anna Staylor received the VASP Social Justice Award for her work consistently advancing social justice and advocating for students, families and communities impacted by inequities.

"This recognition is incredibly meaningful," said Staylor. "Throughout my career, I have been driven by passion for advocacy, commitment to supporting student needs and focus on recognizing  student strengths."

Tom Byrnes, a retired PPS school psychologist who continues to work part-time, received the Lifetime Achievement Award, the organization's highest honor, recognizing his outstanding service to the profession and to Virginia's students and families. Byrnes has served more than 40 years with the division as well as two decades as the VASP treasurer.

"Their commitment to students is inspiring," said Pamela Battle-Hardy, PPS director of special education. "Their willingness to listen, understand and advocate with purpose makes teachers and students feel seen, valued and capable."
